Coronavirus in Canada

Never in my life has one week gone by so fast yet contained so much change and anticipation. It seems like every day this week might as well have been its own decade with the amount of stuff going on, and I can't even fathom what will be happening this time next week. It seems somewhat useless to write about what I've done this week, especially since I can't really think back anything that happened earlier this week without feeling like I'm digging into years-old memories. The only things I can think of that are really worth mentioning were my last day of volunteering at Writers' Exchange for the year, some very windy trips to Wreck Beach to get to know the site for our last design project, and watching the very dramatic Bachelor finale.

While the seriousness of corona has been building for a few weeks now, everything really started to change this week in the US and Canada. As my friends' schools in the states began to shut down one-by-one starting earlier this week, I was bombarded with posts and articles from a range of sources on all social media platforms. It was confusing, because no one here seemed to be seriously stressed or invested in the issue, besides a few more face masks being worn and some chatter around what would happen here, but my mindset was quite chaotic due to all the buzz coming from the US. For the whole week, classes continued as normal with no real comment about what would be happening. Amy and I were trying to figure out what would be best for us to do should we have to leave campus, but for a while it seemed as though we were overreacting for thinking that was a possibility. On Friday afternoon, UBC finally took more concrete steps, sending out an email saying we would transition to online classes for the rest of the term. As of right now, campus is still open and students are allowed to stay in residence, but I definitely feel more comfortable knowing I have a plan should that change. As of right now I will be staying in Vancouver until I was supposed to leave anyways, but I'll keep people updated.

We only have three and a half more weeks of school before finals start, so while this is not especially convenient and while I'm nervous that online school will not be my favorite, I'm glad that UBC is taking precautions considering how many people move around this campus over the course of a day. Next week's post will be interesting, as I'll be able to give my first real update on this new form of learning, and hopefully be able to report back on what it is like to take design classes remotely. I'm hoping we'll still find ways to get the one-on-one time that is so helpful in those classes, but mostly I'm just hoping that I can find ways to not go totally crazy spending so much time in my room.

I hope everyone is and stays healthy!
