Three Months as an Imposter Canadian

I went to title this blog post and, in looking up at the date in the corner of my computer screen, noticed that it has officially been three months since I moved out to Vancouver. While the months have flown by, so much has changed since I first got off that plane that three months does not sound nearly long enough to encompass all that has happened. As I finish up my first semester classes I'm reminded of how quickly twelve weeks can go by, even when that one 8 am lecture feels like it will never end... Despite the many moments of doubt and confusion I've had over these past few months, I know it was important that I come to UBC to experience the revelations, and, honestly, the unresolved doubts, I have. I've learned and unlearned a lot since being here, and while I'm sure I could have learned many of the same things at any other school, I am increasingly grateful that I've had Vancouver as the backdrop this whole time. I had a biology assignment that involved going out into a regional park, and as I walked around one of the lesser-known beaches on campus on Thursday and looked out over the mountains and water, I realized how grateful I am to have this nature surrounding me to act as a buffer from the stress that has built up over the course of the semester. I'm sure I could have handled said stress without the occasional walk in the woods or along the water, but I'm even more sure that I would not be able to keep such a clear mind while dealing with the difficulties of adjusting to university life and preparing for my future had I not been able to leave that stress behind at the entrance to the forest.

This week's activities included the normal set of classes, my very last chem lab (hopefully) ever, taking personality tests with friends to determine that my personality has changed somewhat significantly since I last took the test two or so years ago, going to watch my friend Lilly perform in the UBC Musical Theatre Troupe's rendition of Pippin with Amy (a really great show, and I would recommend any UBC people reading this to go watch one of UBC MTT's shows if you get a chance!), going to a friend's basketball game, and getting a little work done while procrastinating studying for my first two finals that are coming up alarmingly quickly. It's going to be an interesting next few weeks as I finish up classes and start exams, but, until then, enjoy some pictures of the beautiful nature I get to spend so much time in!

View from Tower Beach

More view, this time from atop a giant tree trunk washed ashore

Some of the most interesting rocks I've seen--all in one place

I found a little hideout between a tree trunk and some rocks

Driftwood here is no joke

Came across this as I was walking, thought it looked quite striking

Quick shot from downtown on our way back from the play--Vancouver is getting ready for Christmas!
