UBC Snow Day

Another week, another stint of winter in Vancouver. This week, the snow that had disappeared by the time I wrote my last post returned, and in much larger quantities. On Monday, I started volunteering for Writers' Exchange, and while, for confidentiality reasons, I can't give a whole lot of details, it was lots of fun to play in the snow with the kids. It's definitely a big deal here to get snow, and everyone was excited to get the chance to build a snowman and throw some snowballs. Tuesday was mostly normal for a weekday, with class (I only have one on Tuesdays, though, which is nice), and then playing some guitar with my friend Alonso.

I woke up Wednesday not quite ready to get out of bed, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a text saying UBC had a snow day. I looked out my window to see if we had really gotten that much snow, and while there was a good amount on the roads, I'm not sure it would have constituted a reason to cancel school in Portsmouth. Either way, I was a little bummed to be missing some of my classes that I only have once a week, but I was not going to be upset about a day off. Early afternoon Amy and I went over to a field behind some of the other dorms to help some friends build a ski jump. They had already built it up quite a bit when we got there, but over the next few hours we added to it, and some guys came over with a rail (not sure where they got/keep this 30 foot tube, but that's not important), adding another feature to our terrain park. After a while of building and testing, the jump and rail were as good as they were going to get, and we ended up with over a dozen people skiing and snowboarding off the jump and on the rail. I tried it a few times, and while it definitely wasn't big enough to do super fancy tricks, it was fun to just get a little air and "ski" around the field with the momentum you got. It was my first time on downhill skis this year, and I'm excited to go skiing at Whistler soon!

School was back in session by Thursday, and the rest of my school week went by with little excitement. Friday night I went out with some friends, and it was fun to get out and dance and have a good time. It was also significantly cooler than the last time I went out, both for the walks over and back, and in the actual house. The former was cause for a bit of discomfort, but the latter was much appreciated. I spent yesterday doing work and hanging out with friends, and today's agenda is full of some chores and stuff for school. This next week is supposed to bring a lot of rain, but I'm hoping our suffering down here is lots of snow in the mountains so the skiing will be extra good:)
I didn't get any pictures of the jump before the sun went down, but here's a not-very-good picture of it and the rail
