Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope your week was filled with a little less rain and sickness than mine. It was a tough week to have such inclement weather and a cold, as there were a lot of outdoors activities going on around campus that I didn't want to miss out on. Thankfully, I wasn't too sick the first few days of the week and have been able to balance out the hours spend outside in the rain with hours spent in bed with hot tea.
I started this week off with a 6 am run with my friend Anna. As early as it was, it was nice to begin my day with some exercise, and we ran on some beautiful trails in the forest, which here is full of gigantic conifers. After the run I ended up taking a nap because 6 am was really quite early, then went to class. We stopped by a giant poster sale in our student union building during lunch, and Anna, Esther, Amy and I even went to a yoga class that evening. Tuesday was a more or less normal day, although I did end up locking myself out of my room. It was bound to happen one day... Wednesday was also a very "regular" day; although I haven't had all that many days here, I can assume it was how many Wednesdays in the future will be.
Thursday started at the
wonderful hour of 1:30 am when the Orchard Commons fire alarm began going off. I have no proof that someone pulled it, but if they did, that person is not my all-time favorite human being, to put it kindly. By the time I get back to my room and fell asleep, I only had a few more hours before I would have to get up for my 8-to-8 day. Thankfully, I had a few good breaks during the day and was able to get some work done at the library with some girls from my physics class and between other classes, so when I got out of my computer science lab (before 8, which was very nice), I was able to go home and relax. Friday morning I was able to FaceTime with my friends in Norway before going to class, and then that evening was the Welcome Back BBQ.
Every year, the UBC student union (AMS) puts on a big concert on campus to welcome everyone back for the school year. Over the past few years they have been able to get some pretty big names to perform, and it's a fun event that over 6,000 people attend. This year, the headliners were A$AP Ferg and Lil Nas X (who wrote Old Town Road), until Lil Nas X cancelled :(( Lil Mosey took his spot on the lineup, and with the help of 4 or so other artists, there was music and mosh pits for 6 hours Friday night. Because of the rain and our colds (I am far from the only sick one), my friends and I went a little later to watch the last three acts. Once we found a spot that kept us out of the most intense mosh pit but still somewhat close to the stage, it was a lot of fun to dance (and sing along, when I knew the words) for a few hours.
Saturday was the homecoming football game, this year against Calgary. I'm not sure anyone was all that optimistic about the score as Calgary was the first seed and UBC the last, but there were still tons of students that came out. We were actually winning at the end of the first quarter and still holding on at halftime, but the last half of the game quickly changed that and we ended up losing 47-13. Thankfully, we had gotten tickets for the covered half of the stadium, so we stayed dry as we watched Calgary score touchdown after touchdown, and field goal after field goal. After that we went to get dinner with the group we had watched the game with, but when I realized it was only 7 pm and I was already dead, I called the night there and spent the rest of my evening in bed. Today has been very relaxed as I try to get over this cold so I can enjoy next week and maybe even get outside to try out the UBC Dragon Boat team to see if that's something I might want to do! Have a great week!
